Sewing Ribbons onto ballet shoes

Sewing ribbons is the last thing that most people want to do – but follow these simple steps and you will get perfect results every time!

To begin you will need 2 metres of ribbon, two dress maker pins, pale pink thread and a sewing needle. Note: make sure you choose the correct size ribbon – Flight Dance Supplies carries a 15mm width and 22mm width. Cut your ribbon in half, and then cut those two pieces in half again.Image

The ribbons will be sewed onto the shoe just behind the elastic. Fold the end of the ribbon and pin it through the cotton lining, and not through the leather, about a centimetre in length. You can angle the ribbon forward slightly so it will wrap up around the ankle more securely.

Cut a piece of thread about 30cm long, or the length of your forearm, and tie a few knots at the end of the thread. Begin sewing! Make sure to only sew through the cotton lining and not through the leather. Start sewing on one side of the ribbon and work your way around the bottom, up the other side and across the top. When you reach the top make sure you don’t sew through the binding as you may not be able to adjust the drawstring.

Do the same on the other side of the shoe, and then the other shoe. Once you are done put your shoes on and cut the ribbon if you find it is too long.

Some people like to burn the ends of the ribbon to keep it from fraying – but this is a personal choice!

Follow these simple steps and if you get it wrong don’t worry! You can unpick the thread and start again.

If all else fails, drop them into me at work, Flight Dance Supplies Tuggerah (1,1 Anzac Road opposite McDonalds) and I will sew them on for $10 which includes your 2 meters of ribbon.

Happy sewing!
